Topic: EXTREME IN SPIRITUAL MATTERS
Biblical Text: “ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding”. [Proverbs 4:7]

I recall a brother in a fellowship at the University I graduated from. He was spiritual and active in the fellowship but hates reading his academic book. Sometimes, after going to an all-night prayer meeting, he does not attend lectures throughout the next day. Gradually, his academic workload was piling up and he kept neglecting it. By the time he got to his final year in the University, he had subjects to re-sit for, that will make him stay for at least an extra year in the University. He went to the extreme, dedicated time for his spirituality growth but neglected his academic growth. He was a lazy Christian. God wants us to live a balanced Christian life. He is concerned about your spiritual growth as well as every other needed growth in your life and that includes your mental growth. If the reason why you failed in examination is because of your activities in Church, you are a lazy Christian. I heard the story of a believer who was very active in the fellowship in the University; it did not deter him from coming out with a first class in Engineering. My earthly father showed me an examination script of a student in the university. He did not attempt to answer any of the questions, but he used about three pages of his examination script to preach Christ to the person marking his scripts. He went to the extreme; he failed woefully! Do not be a slothful, lazy Christian who goes to the extreme. Apply wisdom and get understanding.

Topic: SEEKING SPIRITUAL HELP
Biblical Text: “ Our help is in the name of the Lord, who makes heaven and earth”. [Psalm 124:8]

They say desperate situations call for desperate measures. A lot of people seek spiritual help from anywhere in a desperate situation. A Christian woman was looking for a child; she went to meet a spiritualist who claims to be a pastor. He gave her concoction to drink and boiled egg, which he had already soaked in incantation. Few weeks after, she got pregnant and nine months later she gave birth to a baby girl. The girl at nine years of age is a concern to the family. She will go to the marketplace to steal. The young girl does not understand why she steals. She always hears a voice telling her to go and steal. The mother has been deeply concerned. She had gotten herself into a bigger problem from the place she sought for spiritual help. She thought that her not getting pregnant was an issue, but Satan gave her a bigger problem. There are some ‘pastors’ who charge consultation fee for those seeking desperate spiritual help. Some of them even sell anointing oil for as much as #10,000 a bottle to very desperate individuals. Beloved, when you are desperately in need of spiritual help, be desperate for God. Do not be deceived by those herbalists brandishing themselves as men of God; they will cause you bigger problems than what you took to them. The Israelites were in severe affliction and bondage; they sought spiritual help in God. Pharaoh on the other hand sought spiritual help in magicians and sorcerers. Pharaoh tried to hold down the children of Israelites in their bondage with the help of his magicians and sorcerers but failed. The magicians and sorcerers admitted that there is the finger of God in all the things that Moses was doing. Pharaoh did not have the privilege of seeking spiritual help in the right channel. You have that privilege! The right channel of seeking spiritual help is in God; every other channel will lead to bigger trouble.

Topic: BEWARE OF FAKE PROPHETS
Biblical Text: “I have not sent these prophets yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied”. [Jeremiah 23:21]

A woman went to see a prophet to enquire whether she can marry a particular man. The prophet replied in the affirmative. He told her that their marriage will be blessed. Some months after their wedding, the man impregnated another woman. His behaviour suddenly changed, about six years into the marriage, the man left the house to stay with another woman. The woman was devastated, she asked a prophet before she accepted the marriage proposal, ‘How can this happen to her?’ She fell into the trap of a false prophet. King Ahab- King of Israel wanted to go to war with the king of Assyria. The king of Judah-Jehoshaphat volunteered to help the king of Israel. He asked King Ahab that they should enquire from the Lord. King Ahab gathered 400 prophets to enquire whether the battle will be favorable or not. All of the prophets told the kings that the Lord will deliver the king of Syria into their hands. Jehoshaphat was not satisfied; he sensed that the 400 prophets were fake. He asked if there was a prophet of the Lord in Israel. Prophet Micaiah was hastened and brought up to the king. Despite the fact that they pressured him to speak in line with what the 400 prophets had said; he refused. He insisted on speaking only what the Lord says. He told the king, ‘I saw Israel scattered as sheep without a shepherd’ meaning that the king will die if he goes to war. The king disobeyed and went to war on the strength of what the 400 fake prophets had told him. King Ahab lost his life in the war. To believe every prophecy is dangerous; you need to check if it is of the Lord. There are many fake prophets gone into the world to deceive lazy Christians. BEWARE !

Topic: OBEY BEFORE COMPLAIN
Biblical Text: “ And he prayed unto the Lord and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I know that thou art a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness and repentest thee of the evil” . [Jonah 4:2]

Obey before complaining is mostly used in the military, it means when a superior gives you an order, it must be obeyed immediately without questioning; there is no room for complaining when executing an assignment of a superior officer. This applies also in the kingdom, God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, to warn them to turn from their wicked ways. Jonah refused and headed to Tarshish. It was a fatal mistake; he almost paid with his life. He thought his complain was valid and he disobeyed the instruction of the Master. When God gives a command, he is not subjecting it to debate or questioning; He wants the orders carried out immediately. No debate! God told Ananias to go and lay his hand on Saul that he might receive his sight. Ananias brought a complain before God that looked valid to him, ‘Here was a man that afflicted the saints of Jerusalem’. God told Ananias, ‘No debate, go and do what I have told you to do’. You might think the instruction of God is not the best thing to do; your opinion does not matter rather you MUST obey and NOT complain. God told a brother to go and do missions work in another State; he had less than two hundred Naira on him. He did not complain but obeyed. God did a miracle with the two hundred Naira; it feed him, gave him a house and sustained his ministry for over 20 years and still counting. Also, when trusted servant of God gives you an instruction, do not complain rather OBEY.

Topic: DRAW NIGH
Biblical Text: “ Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you to cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded”. [James 4:8a]

Emmanuel laid down starring at the ceiling in his house. He knew he had gone far from God. The thoughts constantly disturbed him. From a young boy singing in the choir to deviating and singing secular music that made him lose focus for God. He had no more time for God. As he stirred up the ceiling, he heard an audible voice, “Emmanuel, you have gone far from me, draw nigh, draw nigh!’ Emmanuel could not hold the tears any longer, he began to sob. The devil’s intention is to draw you farther and farther away from God in order to destroy you; God’s intention is to draw you closer to Him. The good things that God wants to give you are available ONLY when you draw nigh to Him. A lot of people are far from God and still complaining that God is not solving their problems. Jesus said, ‘Come unto me if you are heavy laden’; beloved, without drawing nigh, you cannot be able to get answers to your problems. For a person that has drifted from God; the first step to take is to seek repentance. But it does not stop there, God expects you to draw nigh to him by worshipping Him, communicating with him in prayers and fasting. If your earthly father is shouting your name from a distance of 100km, you can never hear him because you are too far away. That is exactly the case with our heavenly Father; to hear God, you must draw nigh to him. God wants a relationship with you. You can begin today if you do not yet have a relationship with Him.

PRAY IT ∞ Father, help me to draw nearer and nearer unto thee.
